Parlour Palm

Chamaedorea elegans

Also known as Neanthe Bella Palm, Parlor Palm

Native to dense rainforest understories from southern Mexico into Guatemala, this slow-growing dwarf palm thrives in deep shade beneath towering tree canopies. Slender, bamboo-like green stems produce elegant arching fronds with delicate pinnate leaflets, while mature plants send up branched stalks of tiny bead-like yellow flowers. Its remarkable tolerance for dim light and dry indoor air made it a staple of Victorian drawing rooms, anchoring a global popularity that continues today.

Responsible observation
  • Light Exposure: Provide bright, filtered sunlight and protect foliage from direct harsh rays to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Watering Balance: Allow the top several centimeters of potting mix to dry out before watering thoroughly.
  • Foliage Care: Wipe dust from the fronds occasionally with a damp cloth to encourage efficient photosynthesis.
