Chinese Silver Grass

Miscanthus sinensis

Also known as Eulalia Grass, Japanese Silver Grass, Maiden Grass, Susuki Grass

Chinese silver grass forms dense, arching tussocks anchored by tough rhizomes, featuring long leaf blades with distinctive white midribs. In late summer and autumn, shimmering pinkish-to-silvery plumes rise well above the foliage, catching the wind to scatter light, wind-borne seeds. Highly adaptable and vigorous, it readily colonizes disturbed roadsides, forest edges, and meadows where it can outcompete native plant communities.

Why interaction risk is low
Serrated leaf margins can cause sharp skin cuts; handle with gardening gloves.
Why it is dangerous
The finely serrated leaf margins act like miniature saw blades and easily cut exposed skin.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for tall, dense clumps with arching leaf blades featuring a white midrib and razor-sharp edges.
What to do
Wear heavy gloves and long sleeves when cutting back foliage or dividing root clumps.
Responsible observation
  • Pruning: Cut back dead foliage to ground level in late winter before new growth emerges.
  • Handling: Wear long sleeves and heavy gloves to avoid razor-sharp leaf blade cuts.
  • Containment: Remove flower heads before seeds mature to prevent escape into wild habitats.
