Annual Wild Rice

Zizania aquatica

Also known as Southern Wild Rice, Water Oats, Indian Rice, Canada Rice

Annual wild rice grows as an emergent aquatic grass in shallow marshes, sluggish streams, and tidal freshwater flats across eastern North America. Its dramatic flowering heads display drooping male spikelets below and upright female florets above, wind-pollinated across dense wetland beds. Waterfowl and aquatic mammals rely heavily on the falling grains each autumn, fueling migrations and shaping freshwater food webs.
