Sea oats dominate front-line coastal sand dunes throughout the southeastern United States and Caribbean, anchoring shifts of windblown sand with extensive underground rhizomes. Tall, fibrous leaves trap windborne grains to build up dune elevation, while deep roots anchor against storm surges and hurricane tides. In late summer, large drooping panicles of seed heads mature to a golden brown, providing critical forage for beach mice and songbirds.
