Northern Beech Fern

Phegopteris connectilis

Also known as Long Beech Fern, Narrow Beech Fern

Northern beech ferns unfurl delicate, light green triangular fronds that carpet cool forest floors and damp rocky ravines. The distinctive lowest pair of pinnae tilts downward and forward, separating them visually from most other woodland ferns. Spreads via thin, creeping underground rhizomes, often forming loose colonies near mossy boulders and shaded forest seepages.

  • Growth Pattern: Notice how individual fronds grow singularly along creeping underground stems.
  • Microclimate Check: Search in shaded, humid microhabitats like stream banks and rock crevices.
