False turkey-tail forms fan-shaped, leathery crusts on decaying hardwood logs, recycling wood nutrients back into forest soils. Concentric bands of reddish-orange, brown, and buff create striking rainbow-like patterns on its upper surface, while the smooth underside lacks the tiny pores seen in true polypores. This saprotrophic crust fungus often persists year-round, expanding across fallen logs in moist deciduous forests.
