Eastern cauliflower mushrooms form dense, rosetted clumps of flattened, petal-like branches that emerge at the base of living hardwoods and conifers. Unlike true coral fungi, its branches are broadly flattened and zoned with subtle concentric bands, resembling a frilly head of lettuce or ribboned sea coral. The fungus acts as a parasitic and saprotrophic root pathogen, causing a slow brown cubical rot that can weaken host trees over many decades.
