Trooping crumble caps often erupt in spectacular, dense colonies numbering in the hundreds or thousands around decaying tree stumps and buried roots. Unlike many other inky caps, their pleated, bell-shaped caps do not dissolve into an inky black liquid as they age, but instead shrivel and collapse into fragile papery remnants within a couple of days. Their rapid life cycle allows them to quickly exploit pulses of moisture following heavy rainfall, releasing millions of dark spores into woodland microclimates.
