Powdery Sulfur Bolete

Pulveroboletus ravenelii

Also known as Ravenel's Bolete

Ravenel's bolete stands out on the forest floor, initially encased in a bright sulfur-yellow powdery veil that coats both the cap and stem. As the fruiting body expands, this powdery coating breaks apart to leave a delicate ring on the upper stem and reveal a reddish-brown to orange cap surface underneath. Pressing the yellow pore layer on the underside triggers a rapid color change to dark blue-green, a classic reaction among many boletes.

Many wild mushrooms have toxic look-alikes; never consume wild fungi based on app identification alone.
Responsible observation
  • Inspect the veil: Look for bright yellow powder coating the cap and stem of young specimens.
  • Check for bruising: Gently touch the pore surface to observe a rapid blue-green color change.
  • Examine nearby trees: Search the leaf litter around mature oaks and pines after heavy rain.
