Suede Bolete
Xerocomus subtomentosusAlso known as Brown And Yellow Bolete, Boring Brown Bolete, Yellow-Cracked Bolete
Suede boletes form vital mycorrhizal partnerships with both broadleaf hardwoods and coniferous trees across northern temperate forests. The velvety olive-brown cap feels remarkably like soft suede when young, often cracking slightly with age to reveal yellow flesh beneath. Its underside features bright yellow pores that slowly bruise faint blue or green when bruised or cut.

- Why interaction risk is low
- Many wild mushrooms have dangerous look-alikes; never eat wild fungi based on app identification alone.
Responsible observation
- Pore Inspection: Check the underside for bright yellow pores that slowly bruise faint blue-green when pressed.
- Touch Texture: Gently feel the cap surface to notice its distinctive soft, suede-like texture.
- Tree Association: Look around the root zones of mature oak, beech, or pine trees during damp autumn days.
