Torrent ducks are master navigators of white-water rivers in the Andes, effortlessly swimming and diving against rushing mountain currents that would sweep away other waterfowl. Streamlined bodies, powerful webbed feet, and long, stiff tail feathers allow them to anchor onto slippery rocks while foraging for aquatic larvae. Pairs defend year-round territories along specific river stretches, aggressively warding off intruders with sharp bony spurs on their wing joints.
