Hoatzins are unique folivorous birds that digest leaves using a specialized foregut fermentation crop, giving them a distinct musky odor often compared to fresh cow manure. Nestlings possess functional claws on their wing digits, allowing them to climb back up into canopy foliage if they drop into the water below to escape predators. Social and vocal, these clumsy flyers spend their days lounging in small family groups along marshy riverbanks across tropical South America.
