Zebra doves spend much of their time foraging on open ground, stepping rhythmically through lawns, roadsides, and agricultural fields in search of grass seeds. Famous across Southeast Asia and Hawaii for their soft, staccato cooing calls, these gentle birds are popular in songbird competitions where captive individuals are judged on vocal performance. They form tight monogamous pairs that nest in small trees or shrubs, constructing loose platforms of twigs to raise their young.
