Black-breasted Parrotbill

Paradoxornis flavirostris

Also known as Yellow-billed Parrotbill

Inhabiting the dense, tall grasslands of the Brahmaputra floodplain, this heavy-billed passerine moves through thick reeds in tight, secretive flocks outside the breeding season. Its specialized, parrot-like beak enables it to crush stout reed stems and tear into bamboo to extract hidden insect larvae and seeds. Loud, bubbling chatter and harsh scolding calls often give away its location long before the bird emerges from the impenetrable vegetation.

Why interaction risk is low
Safe to observe at a normal distance.
What to notice
Look for a stocky, long-tailed bird with a massive yellow bill, black breast patch, and rufous crown foraging in tall grasses.
Support conservation
Observe from marked roads or hides, and avoid using playback calls that distract territorial birds from breeding.
Responsible observation
  • Listen Carefully: Dense reedbeds make visual spotting difficult, so track its diagnostic low-pitched chatter and scolding notes.
  • Visit at Dawn: Activity peaks in the early morning when foraging flocks feed near the top edges of tall elephant grass.
  • Stay on Tracks: Remaining on established trails avoids trampling sensitive floodplain vegetation and disturbing concealed nests.
