Varied Thrush

Also known as Oregon Robin, Alaska Robin, Varied Robin

Varied thrushes inhabit the dark, humid coniferous rainforests of western North America, filling the misty canopy with eerie, single-pitched whistling songs. Their striking plumage pairs rich orange undersides and wing bars with a dark grey breast band. During winter, many move down from high-elevation breeding grounds to suburban yards and parkland, energetically tossing aside wet leaf litter to search for hidden invertebrates and fallen berries.
