Crimson chats wander unpredictably across Australia's arid interior, irrupting in large flocks following erratic desert rains. Breeding males show off a brilliant scarlet cap, rump, and chest against a bright white throat, while females sport much subtler sandy brown plumage. They spend much of their day hopping actively along the ground or low shrubs, plucking insects from foliage and sipping nectar from desert blooms.
