Eurasian Nuthatch

Sitta europaea

Also known as Wood Nuthatch

Eurasian nuthatches are famous for their remarkable ability to walk head-first down vertical tree trunks without using their tails for support. They wedge nuts, seeds, and hard-bodied insects into bark crevices, using powerful chisel-like bills to hammer them open with sharp blows. Breeding pairs defend permanent territories year-round, often plastering wet mud around tree cavity entrances to shrink the opening and exclude larger nest competitors.
