Black-headed Heron

Ardea melanocephala

Black-headed herons are stately grassland hunters that stalk terrestrial prey with deliberate, slow-motion strides rather than wading in deep water. Unlike many aquatic relatives, they frequently congregate in open savannahs, pastureland, and road verges where they skewer rodents and grasshoppers with lightning strikes. They nest colonially in tall trees or reedbeds, filling the canopy with harsh, raucous croaks during the breeding season.

What to do
Maintain a respectful distance; if injured, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator equipped with eye protection.
Responsible observation
  • Field Observation: Watch open fields after mowing or burning, where these birds gather in high numbers to catch exposed prey.
  • Colony Etiquette: Keep back from nesting trees during breeding season to avoid causing panic among brooding adults.
