Common buzzards soar on broad wings over open farmland and woodland edges, often uttering a distinctive, high-pitched mewing call that echoes across the countryside. Their plumage varies wildly from dark chocolate brown to almost pure white beneath, making individual identification a rewarding challenge. Excellent opportunistic hunters, they frequently perch on fence posts along roadways to scout for small mammals and earthworms.
