Galah

Eolophus roseicapilla

Also known as Pink and Grey Cockatoo, Rose-breasted Cockatoo, Galah Cockatoo

Galahs form lifelong monogamous pairs that congregate into massive, vocal flocks across open woodlands, grasslands, and suburban parks. Flocks are famous for playful acrobatics, performing coordinated dives, high-speed maneuvers, and hanging upside down from power lines in blustery winds. Both parents share nesting duties inside tree hollows, continuously lining the interior with fresh, fragrant eucalyptus leaves to cushion their eggs.

Why interaction risk is low
Possesses a strong beak capable of inflicting deep bites if handled or trapped.
Why it is dangerous
Large, curved bills deliver high crushing pressure that easily lacerates human fingers and hands when birds feel cornered.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Recognized by its bright rose-pink chest, silver-grey back, and pale pinkish-white erectile crest.
What to do
Do not attempt to touch or rescue injured birds bare-handed; use a thick towel or call wildlife rescuers.
Responsible observation
  • Observation Distance: Watch feeding flocks from several meters away to avoid triggering alarm flights.
  • Lawn Encounters: Approach quietly around parks where habituated birds forage peacefully on turf.
  • Wildlife Etiquette: Avoid offering bread or commercial sunflower seeds, which cause nutritional disorders.
