Fischer's Lovebird

Agapornis fischeri

Also known as Fischer's Parrot

Fischer's lovebirds form tight, lifelong pair bonds that spend their days foraging together in noisy woodland flocks across northern Tanzania. Their vibrant orange heads and deep green bodies stand out against dry acacia savannas, where they feed primarily on native grass seeds and wild fruits. Wild populations have declined due to historical overexploitation for the pet trade, making their remaining native habitats a critical refuge.

What to notice
Distinguished by a bright orange head blending into a yellow collar, a bright red beak, and prominent white eye rings.
Support conservation
Keep a respectful distance to avoid flushing flocks from feeding or nesting sites in hollow trees.
Responsible observation
  • Listening for Flocks: Listen for high-pitched, chattering vocalizations echoing through dry acacia groves.
  • Spotting Nesting Sites: Look near tree cavities or palm fronds where pairs nest cooperatively in small colonies.
  • Respecting Native Habitat: Avoid disturbing feeding flocks in farmland or woodland to allow uninterrupted foraging.
