Bird
Slaty-breasted Tinamou
Crypturellus boucardiAlso known as Boucard's Tinamou
Slaty-breasted tinamous walk cautiously across the shadowed floor of mature rainforests, flicking through damp leaf litter in search of fallen berries and ground beetles. Males broadcast their presence across the dense understory using deep, mournful, three-note whistles that carry over long distances. In an unusual reproductive system shared by tinamous, males incubate glossy, jewel-toned clutches laid by multiple females and rear the precocial chicks alone.
