El Hierro Giant Lizard
Gallotia simonyiAlso known as Hierro Giant Lizard, Simony's Giant Lizard, Hierro Lizard
El Hierro giant lizards are massive, dark-bodied lacertids that spend their mornings basking on vertical volcanic crags before foraging among sparse island scrub. Primarily herbivorous as adults, they feed on endemic plants, fruits, and insects while navigating steep, inaccessible basalt cliffs. Once feared extinct due to historical overcollection and introduced predators, intensive captive breeding and cliffside reintroductions have helped stabilize their fragile wild populations.

- Recognized by its robust, dark charcoal body, large triangular head, and prominent rows of pale yellow spots along its flanks.
- Support conservation
- Do not enter restricted cliff habitats or reintroduction zones; observe solely from established trails with optics and report sightings to local rangers.
Responsible observation
- Viewing Sites: Visit dedicated captive breeding centers on El Hierro, as wild populations inhabit restricted, vertical cliff sanctuaries.
- Binocular Distance: Scan rocky basalt crevices quietly from designated lookouts without approaching cliff edges or disturbing loose stone.
- Legal Protection: Maintain total distance and never attempt to handle or feed this strictly protected island reptile.
