Western Brown Snake
Pseudonaja mengdeniAlso known as Mengden's Brown Snake, Gwardar
Western brown snakes are fast, alert elapids native to the arid interior of Australia, capable of thriving in harsh, sunbaked landscapes. They hunt actively by day and into warm evenings, using keen eyesight to track down lizards, small mammals, and ground-nesting birds across spinifex and scrub. When confronted, they quickly rear into a classic S-shaped defensive posture, striking rapidly if pressed before darting into rodent burrows or rock crevices.
