Przewalski's wonder geckos navigate the arid dunes and gravel plains of the Gobi Desert with large, plate-like scales that minimize water loss. During peak daylight hours, these reptiles retreat into deep burrows to escape extreme heat, emerging at night to hunt ground-dwelling invertebrates. When threatened, they rub specialized overlapping tail scales together to produce a loud, raspy hiss that deters predators.
