Roan Antelope
Hippotragus equinusAlso known as Roan
Roan antelopes are massive, horse-like grazers that gather in small nursery herds commanded by a dominant bull and an experienced matriarch. They favor lightly wooded savannas with knee-high grasses, avoiding heavily bush-encroached terrain where sightlines are compromised. When pressed by big cats or wild dogs, both sexes will drop onto their knees or stand firm to wield their formidable, scythe-like horns in aggressive self-defense.

Interaction riskHigh
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is high
- Powerful enough to inflict lethal injuries with curved horns; observe from a safe distance inside a vehicle.
- Why it is dangerous
- Weighing up to 300 kilograms and armed with heavy, backward-curved horns, individuals will aggressively charge and stab threats when cornered or defending calves.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for a greyish-brown or reddish coat, long tasseled ears, a stiff neck mane, and a bold black-and-white facial mask.
- What to do
- Never approach on foot; stay within safari vehicles and give animals plenty of clearance near water sources.
Responsible observation
- Safari Etiquette: Keep vehicles idling quietly at a respectful distance, as roans are notoriously shy and easily startled.
- Binocular Scanning: Look for donkey-like ears with reddish tufts twitching above the level of tall savanna grasses.
