Allen's Chipmunk

Tamias senex

Also known as Shadow Chipmunk

Allen's chipmunks spend a remarkable amount of their daylight hours high in the forest canopy, clambering along branch tips to harvest fresh conifer cones and lichens. Beneath the canopy, they gather subterranean fungi by scent and store vast seed caches in underground burrows, actively shaping the regeneration of Sierra Nevada forests. When alarmed, they produce rapid, bird-like chipping calls while flicking their bushy tails, alerting neighboring forest creatures to approaching raptors or carnivores.

  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is moderate
Can carry disease-bearing fleas and delivers painful bites if handled; observe from a respectful distance.
Why it is dangerous
Host fleas that can transmit sylvatic plague, and their sharp incisors can cause deep punctures.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a robust chipmunk with distinct dark and light facial stripes and a shadowy, dark dorsal coat.
What to do
Never handle wild chipmunks, and keep pets on a leash to prevent cornering or flea exposure.
Responsible observation
  • Binocular Spotting: Scan high horizontal branches of mature conifers where they frequently feed.
  • Do Not Feed: Avoid offering food, as habituation promotes rodent-borne disease transmission.
  • Listen Carefully: Tune your ears to sharp, repetitive chipping calls coming from the understory.
