California Chipmunk
Tamias obscurusAlso known as Chaparral Chipmunk
California chipmunks are agile ground-dwellers closely adapted to the arid brushlands and pinyon-juniper belts of the southwestern mountains. They spend peak daylight hours foraging among granite boulders and chaparral shrubs, stuffing internal cheek pouches with seeds to stash in underground caches. Their sharp, bird-like chipping alarm calls echo across brushy slopes to warn neighbors of approaching raptors or snakes.

Interaction riskModerate
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is moderate
- Wild rodents can harbor flea-borne pathogens and bite if cornered; observe from a respectful distance.
- Why it is dangerous
- Wild rodents may carry fleas infected with pathogens like Yersinia pestis or harbor hantavirus, and they deliver painful bites with sharp incisors when cornered.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for alternating dark and cream facial stripes combined with a grayish-brown body and five subdued dark dorsal stripes.
- What to do
- Never corner, feed, or attempt to handle wild chipmunks; maintain several paces of distance and pack out all food scraps.
Responsible observation
- Keep Your Distance: Avoid tempting chipmunks with snacks, which disrupts natural foraging and spreads disease.
- Listen for Alarm Chills: High-pitched chipping calls often signal that one has spotted you and retreated to cover.
- Watch Granite Boulders: Sunny rocky outcrops in chaparral are prime locations to spot them warming up in early morning.
