Southern African Hedgehog
Atelerix frontalisAlso known as Cape Hedgehog
Southern African hedgehogs are solitary, nocturnal insectivores famous for rolling into a tight, prickly sphere when startled. They navigate dry scrub and savannas using acute hearing and a sharp sense of smell, snuffling through leaf litter for ground-dwelling invertebrates. During cold winters and periods of food scarcity, they enter torpor or prolonged hibernation to conserve energy.

Interaction riskLow
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Sharp spines can puncture skin and cornered individuals may bite; observe without handling.
- Why it is dangerous
- Dense, modified keratin spines deliver sharp puncture wounds, and stressed individuals can inflict a painful defensive bite.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Recognized by a pale white forehead band contrasting with a dark face mask and a coat of banded brown and cream spines.
- What to do
- Maintain a respectful distance and allow the hedgehog to unroll and depart on its own terms without attempting to hold it.
Responsible observation
- Night Spotting: Look quietly along garden edges or open pathways after dusk with a red-filtered flashlight.
- Road Caution: Watch the road surface when driving through rural savannas on warm nights.
- Handling Etiquette: Do not attempt to touch or lift rolled-up individuals, which causes severe stress.
