Mammal
Mongoose Lemur
Eulemur mongozAlso known as Mongoz Lemur
Mongoose lemurs shift their daily activity schedule with the seasons, foraging by day during wet periods and turning cathemeral or primarily nocturnal during hot, dry months. Family units typically comprise an adult mated pair and their dependent young, defending small home ranges through vocal grunts and territorial scent marking. In the dry season, they rely heavily on the rich floral nectar of silk cotton trees, dusting their muzzles with pollen and acting as vital canopy pollinators.

- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Wild primates can deliver a sharp defensive bite if cornered; observe quietly from a respectful distance.
- What to notice
- Look for a small arboreal primate with a pointed snout and distinct beard, reddish-brown in males and white in females.
- Support conservation
- Never touch, feed, or corner them; stay on established forest trails and use red-filtered flashlights for night viewings.
Responsible observation
- Spotting Hours: Search during twilight or night walks with a red spotlight in the dry season when they are active.
- Listen for Calls: Listen for rasping, low-pitched grunts and alarm barks echoing through the upper canopy.
- Maintain Space: Keep at least 7 meters back to avoid disrupting grooming, nursing, or fragile feeding routines.
