Southern tamanduas navigate canopy branches and forest floors alike, anchored by prehensile tails that act as a fifth limb. Lacking teeth entirely, these specialized mammals use a foot long sticky tongue to slurp up thousands of ants and termites each day. When threatened, they rise onto their hind legs and extend their powerful hooked claws in a defensive tripod posture.
