Mainland Leopard Cat

Prionailurus bengalensis

Also known as Asian Leopard Cat, Leopard Cat

Leopard cats are agile nocturnal hunters that move effortlessly between dense forest canopies and open farmland in search of small prey. Solitary individuals establish large home ranges demarcated by scent markings and scratch posts on fallen timber. Litters of two to four spotted kittens are reared in secluded tree hollows or rocky crevices until they learn to hunt independently at several months of age.

Why it is dangerous
Sharp canine teeth and claws can cause deep punctures carrying Pasteurella multocida and other bacteria that trigger rapid, severe tissue infections.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Recognized by dark solid spots and rosettes over a tawny coat with prominent white facial stripes running from the inner eyes upward.
What to do
Never corner, touch, or attempt to rescue an adult or kitten without specialized wildlife handling gear.
Responsible observation
  • Night Spotting: Look along tree limbs and plantation edges with a gentle red flashlight beam after sunset.
  • Track Signs: Watch for small, rounded four-toed footprints lacking claw indentations in wet mud along paths.
  • Camera Trapping: Position motion-activated trail cameras at knee height along natural ridgelines and streams.
