Striped Weasel
Poecilogale albinuchaAlso known as African Striped Weasel, White-naped Weasel, African Weasel
African striped weasels are specialized nocturnal hunters uniquely adapted to navigating rodent burrows and subterranean tunnels. They dispatch prey using swift, precise bites to the back of the neck, frequently tackling rodents almost equal to their own body size. When threatened, they erect their white dorsal stripes and tail before ejecting a foul-smelling anal scent that deters much larger predators.

Interaction riskLow
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Cornered individuals deliver sharp defensive bites and emit noxious musk; observe quietly from a respectful distance.
- Why it is dangerous
- Equipped with powerful jaws and needle-sharp teeth that deliver deep puncture wounds when handled, alongside anal glands that spray blinding, nauseating musk.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Recognizable by an elongated black body, four pale dorsal stripes, and a bright white nape and tail.
- What to do
- Do not attempt to corner, grasp, or trap; retreat slowly if it arches its back and raises its tail.
Responsible observation
- Night Spotting: Look for reflective eye-shine along grassland verges and farm tracks after dusk.
- Maintain Space: Give foraging individuals a wide berth to avoid triggering a musk spray.
- Burrow Awareness: Watch open rodent excavations where individuals frequently enter to hunt.
