As Madagascar's largest endemic mammalian carnivore, the fossa combines cat-like agility with broad plantigrade feet to effortlessly scale forest canopy trunks. Solitary and strictly territorial, individuals hunt both day and night, using their remarkably long tails for balance during high-speed arboreal chases after lemurs. Females exhibit transient male-like genitalia during youth and defend temporary mating trees where multiple males gather to compete for access.
