Seba's Short-tailed Bat

Carollia perspicillata

Also known as Seba's Bat, Short-tailed Fruit Bat

Seba's short-tailed bats navigate dense Neotropical forest understories using high-frequency echolocation and a remarkably acute sense of smell tuned to ripening fruit. Social colonies roost in caves, hollow trees, and abandoned tunnels, where dominant males defend harems of multiple females against vocal rivals. As specialized consumers of pioneer shrub fruits, these bats disperse enormous quantities of seeds nightly, playing an indispensable role in forest regeneration across the Americas.

Why interaction risk is moderate
Can carry rabies and may bite if handled; observe roosts from a distance without touching.
Why it is dangerous
Like all wild bats, individuals can harbor rabies virus and other zoonotic pathogens, transmitting them through defensive bites.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a triangular fleshy nose-leaf, short tail membrane, and uniform greyish-brown to chestnut fur.
What to do
Never touch a grounded or roosting bat with bare hands; contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if an injured animal is found.
Responsible observation
  • Roost etiquette: Avoid shining bright flashlights directly into hollow trees or caves where colonies rest.
  • Night observation: Position yourself quietly near flowering or fruiting pepper shrubs to watch them feed.
