Greater mouse-eared bats are among Europe's largest microbats, specializing in listening for the rustle of large beetles and gleaning them directly off forest floors. Summer maternity colonies gather in warm church attics and limestone caves, where females raise single pups that learn to fly within four weeks. During winter, individuals migrate to deep, humid underground caverns to hibernate safely through cold weather.
