Amphibian
Olm
Proteus anguinusAlso known as Proteus, Human Fish, Cave Salamander, White Salamander
Olms are blind, subterranean salamanders perfectly adapted to pitch-black karst waterways, retaining their delicate external gills and larval form throughout life. They navigate subterranean caverns using acute chemoreception, hearing, and electroreception, remaining motionless for years to conserve metabolic energy in nutrient-poor waters. Females lay small clutches of eggs under submerged stones or occasionally give birth to live young, guarding them diligently in cold, pristine aquifer depths.

Interaction riskLow
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Harmless and safe to observe at a distance in authorized karst show caves.
- What to notice
- Look for a pale, eel-like body with four tiny limbs, red external gills, and a snout lacking visible eyes.
- Support conservation
- Never touch, capture, or disturb wild individuals, and observe strict no-contact rules in subterranean habitats.
Responsible observation
- Cave tours: View through specialized low-light observation tanks in protected show caves such as Postojna.
- Light sensitivity: Avoid using bright flashes or torches, as their sensitive skin detects intense illumination.
- Water quality: Never contaminate or disrupt subterranean water sources, which are vital for their survival.
