California Slender Salamander

Batrachoseps attenuatus

Resembling a miniature earthworm, this lungless amphibian respires entirely through its moist skin and mouth lining while creeping through forest litter on diminutive four-toed limbs. When startled, it thrashes violently or coils into an intricate spiral to confuse predators and protect its head. Individuals spend dry Mediterranean summers deep underground in animal burrows, emerging onto the surface immediately after winter rains saturate the soil.
