African Bullfrog

Pyxicephalus adspersus

Also known as Giant Bullfrog, South African Burrowing Frog, Pixie Frog

African bullfrogs are among the largest amphibians on Earth, spending dry months dormant underground inside tough cocoon membranes until heavy rains spark explosive breeding events. Males aggressively defend territory and will dig drainage channels with their hind legs to save drying tadpole pools. Armed with tooth-like bony projections in their lower jaw, these voracious predators ambush almost any creature small enough to swallow.

  3. High
  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is low
Sharp tooth-like jaw projections deliver a painful bite; keep a safe distance and avoid handling.
Why it is dangerous
Powerful jaw muscles and sharp tooth-like odontodes can break human skin and inflict painful lacerations.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a massive olive-green body with raised skin ridges and bright orange or yellow flank markings.
What to do
Never corner wild individuals or reach near males actively protecting egg clutches or tadpole channels.
Responsible observation
  • Observation: Watch for emerging individuals right after heavy rainstorms initiate breeding behavior.
  • Safety: Keep hands clear of aggressive males guarding tadpole pools, as they charge potential threats.
  • Photography: Use a telephoto lens to photograph head-on postures without triggering defensive strikes.
