Amphibian
Patagonia Frog
Atelognathus patagonicusAlso known as Laguna Blanca Frog, Patagonian Frog
Patagonia frogs display striking morphological plasticity, producing an aquatic morph with loose, baggy skin folds for underwater breathing and a smaller littoral morph built for life along rocky shorelines. Native exclusively to the windswept volcanic plateaus of western Argentina, they shelter beneath submerged basalt rocks and emerge on calm days to bask in shallow water. Catastrophic population crashes followed the twentieth-century introduction of predatory fish to Laguna Blanca, restricting surviving populations to tiny, fishless satellite lagoons.

- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Safe to observe at a normal distance.
- What to notice
- Small brownish-green frog with bumpy skin or baggy aquatic skin folds, found in basaltic Neuquén wetlands.
- Support conservation
- Do not capture or handle individuals, and respect all restricted zones within Laguna Blanca National Park.
Responsible observation
- Shoreline care: Walk gently along pond borders to avoid collapsing littoral burrows and shelters.
- Biosecurity: Disinfect all footwear and gear before approaching wetlands to stop chytrid fungus spread.
- Viewing technique: Use polarized sunglasses on sunny, windless mornings to spot individuals in shallow water.
