Valentin's Sharpnose Puffer
Canthigaster valentiniAlso known as Saddled Puffer, Black Saddled Toby, Valentin's Toby, Saddled Toby
Valentin's sharpnose puffers are small, highly territorial reef dwellers easily recognized by the bold black saddles crossing their backs and their pointed, beak-like snouts. They navigate complex coral branches with precise, helicopter-like movements powered by their pectoral fins. During the day, they actively forage in small harems, defending their home ranges against rival puffers.

Do not touch or handle, and never attempt to consume this fish.- Observe swimming style: Watch how they use their dorsal and anal fins like tiny oars to hover and maneuver backward.
- Look for the mimic: Search nearby soft corals for the blacksaddle filefish, which mimics this toxic puffer to avoid predators.
- Keep your distance: Avoid cornering them, as they will stressfully inflate their bodies with water as a last-resort defense.
