Longnose Lancetfish
Alepisaurus feroxAlso known as Cannibal Fish, Long-snouted Lancetfish
Gliding through cold oceanic depths down to nearly 2,000 meters, this ambush predator strikes with massive dagger-like fangs and a towering sailfin. Its scaleless, silvery body possesses watery flesh suited for sudden vertical lunges rather than sustained cruising. Equipped with an exceptionally slow digestive process, lancetfish frequently hold virtually intact prey in their bellies, making them living biological samplers of the deep sea for researchers.

Interaction riskLow
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Teeth are extremely sharp and cause deep lacerations; avoid handling jaws of landed specimens.
- Why it is dangerous
- Large palatine fangs and razor-like teeth can easily slice human skin and sever tendons even in dead or dying individuals.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for a slender silvery body, huge dark eyes, a tall sail-like dorsal fin, and mouth full of upright fangs.
- What to do
- Never touch or manipulate the mouth directly; use long-handled release tools or heavy protective gear.
Responsible observation
- Beached Specimens: Photograph and report strandings to marine researchers, as stomach contents yield valuable ecological data.
- Bycatch Caution: Keep hands well clear of the tooth-lined jaws when unhooking fish caught on offshore fishing tackle.
