Banded Archerfish
Toxotes jaculatrixAlso known as Common Archerfish, Archerfish
Banded archerfish cruise just beneath the surface of mangrove estuaries and brackish waterways, continuously scanning overhanging vegetation for terrestrial prey. By pressing their tongue against a groove in the palate, they shoot a precise jet of water capable of knocking insects off foliage up to two meters away. Their binocular vision automatically compensates for water-surface light refraction, allowing them to dart toward the predicted landing point before the prey strikes the water.
