Golden Mahseer
Tor putitoraAlso known as Putitor Mahseer, Himalayan Mahseer, Yellow-finned Mahseer
Golden mahseer are legendary river giants of the Himalayan foothills, renowned for their powerful torpedo-shaped bodies and massive, armor-like golden scales. They undertake arduous upstream migrations during the monsoon season to breed in clear, gravel-bedded mountain tributaries before retreating to deeper riverine pools for the winter. Intense fishing pressure, dam construction, and habitat degradation have drastically reduced their numbers across their native river systems.

Interaction riskLow
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Harmless to humans; safe to observe from riverbanks or through catch-and-release angling.
- What to notice
- Look for a streamlined, thick-bodied fish with brilliant golden-olive scales, thick fleshy lips, and pairs of sensory barbels.
- Support conservation
- If accidentally hooked, keep the fish submerged in water, unhook gently without squeezing the gill covers, and revive thoroughly before release.
Responsible observation
- Best Viewing: Scan clear, deep pools below rapids in Himalayan rivers during early morning.
- Angling Ethics: Always practice strict catch-and-release with barbless hooks to protect wild stocks.
- Habitat Protection: Avoid disturbing shallow gravel runs where adults lay eggs during monsoon.
