Native to the high-altitude Lake Sevan in Armenia, the Sevan trout once flourished as a specialized cold-water fish divided into four distinct seasonal morphs. Water diversion projects, habitat loss, and introduced invasive competitors during the mid-twentieth century severely disrupted its delicate spawning grounds. Highly celebrated in regional culture and folklore, this renowned salmonid is now considered extinct in its native lake ecosystem.
