Striped hermit crabs stand out along western Atlantic shores with distinct white and grey vertical stripes running down their legs and equal-sized claws. These adaptable scavengers inhabit muddy shores, salt marshes, and shallow estuaries, frequently surviving long periods exposed to air during low tide. They inhabit discarded gastropod shells, periodically fighting or trading with neighbors to upgrade into roomier housing as they grow.
