European Spiny Lobster

Palinurus elephas

Also known as Common Spiny Lobster, Mediterranean Spiny Lobster, Crawfish, Red Lobster

European spiny lobsters inhabit sublittoral rocky reefs, navigating crevices and kelp-covered shelves where they shelter during daylight hours. Unlike clawed lobsters, they lack massive pincers and instead defend themselves with a heavy, spine-studded carapace and long, stout antennae that can produce a rasping acoustic stridulation to startle predators. At night, they emerge to forage across the seabed and can undertake coordinated seasonal migrations in single-file queues across open sandy stretches.

Why interaction risk is low
Safe to observe at a normal distance.
What to notice
Look for a reddish-brown to purple spiny carapace, absence of large claws, and exceptionally thick, banded antennae.
Support conservation
Maintain passive diver observation and never attempt to extract individuals from their protective rock shelters.
Responsible observation
  • Diving Etiquette: Avoid shining high-intensity dive torches directly into dark crevices where lobsters rest.
  • No-Touch Policy: Keep hands away from their sharp spines and avoid grabbing their fragile, sensory antennae.
  • Observation Timing: Plan dusk or night dives along rocky drop-offs to see them actively prowling the seabed.
