Falculifer rostratus

Falculifer rostratus

Also known as Pigeon Feather Mite

Falculifer rostratus is an obligate feather mite that lives primarily along the vanes of flight and wing feathers on doves and pigeons. Males exhibit dramatic morphological variations, developing disproportionately enlarged chelicerae and modified forelegs used to grasp rivals or mates. They spend their entire life cycle on avian hosts, feeding primarily on secretions from the preen gland and environmental particles without harming feather shaft integrity.

Responsible observation
  • Microscopic Observation: Examine shed wing feathers of pigeons under 20x to 40x magnification with transmitted light.
  • Gentle Handling: Handle shed feathers carefully by the quill to keep delicate specimens intact along the barbs.
  • Hygiene Protocol: Wash hands thoroughly after inspecting wild bird plumage to prevent spreading avian pathogens.
