False Milkweed Bug

False milkweed bugs wear striking red and black warning colors that advertise their unpalatability to hungry predators. Despite their common name, adults and nymphs feed primarily on the seeds of oxeye sunflowers rather than true milkweeds. Adults overwinter in leaf litter and emerge in late spring to mate and lay eggs on host plants.
