Eastern giant water bugs navigate quiet ponds and slow streams, lurking among aquatic vegetation to ambush aquatic insects, tadpoles, and small fish. Females deposit up to a hundred eggs directly onto the wings of males, who spend weeks brooding, cleaning, and aerating the clutch until the young hatch. Equipping raptorial front legs and a piercing beak, these aquatic predators play a key role in controlling prey populations in freshwater ecosystems.
